Prevent Insect Intrusion via Vent Holes with our Insect Mesh

Publishedon Thursday, January 26, 2012

Air vents are easy access points through which flying insects and other pests can access your home. Insects such as midges and ants are small enough to crawl or fly through the vents and can prove to be difficult to deter.

The best way to avoid insect intrusion in this way is to cover all air vents in your home with insect mesh. You need to choose a mesh which is flexible enough that it can be cut to the required shape, and fine enough to keep out small insects. The process which you need to go through is very simple and could save you from a lot of insect-related hassle…

First of all turn off the ventilation system before you start work, and then remove the vent cover on the outside of your house. To part the vent cover from the vent you may need to remove some screws or cut through the sealant bonding the two parts together, so make sure you have the correct tools for the job before you begin. Once the cover is removed clean away any dirt and dead insects which might be clogging up the vent with your hoover. It is a much nicer job doing it this way than using a damp cloth!

Next you need to measure and mark out the size and shape of the mesh you require using the vent cover as a rough guide. Remember to cut the mesh a little larger than the cover so that you can secure it in place around the cover. You will need sharp and sturdy scissors or shears to cut through the mesh neatly.

Once you have your mesh shape cut out you need to secure it tightly around the cover using nails or tacks. To ensure that there are no creepy crawly sized gaps between the cover and the mesh it is a good idea to add sealant or superglue around the edges to give a perfect fit. Once the sealant or super glue is dry tidy up your handy work by snipping off any extra bits of mesh, and secure the new and improved cover to the vent using sealant or screws. Whichever way you choose to re-secure the cover, make sure it fits perfectly with no gaps to create an insect-proof seal!
