The Uk's Top 5 Garden Pests
Published on Monday, December 19, 2011
- Flies:
It’s probably no surprise that flies appear on our list of the top 5 household pets! These little blighters carry a myriad of nasty diseases (including food poisoning), vomit on your food and reproduce at an alarming rate! The war against flies, particularly in the summer and autumn months, feels like a never ending struggle and we are reluctant to close doors and windows to keep them out, especially when the temperature rises. For nuisance factor alone, flies are our number one.
- Wasps:
Wasps may not be as numerous in the average home as flies, but we have all experienced the inconvenience and sometimes pain that comes along with having a Vespula Vulgaris buzzing around our homes. It can be particularly annoying and dangerous if you have a wasps nest on your property. Wasps commonly build their nest in loft spaces and garden sheds. If this happens it is best to call someone in to deal with the issue, do not go near the nest yourself as each nest can contain over 25,000 wasps!
- Spiders
Spiders are perhaps the insect which the UK population are most scared of! The crazy thing is that no native UK spiders are dangerous to humans as non are venomous. Clearly it is something to do with long spindly legs and beady eyes that look down on you from the coving shudder
- Ants
Ants are, in my opinion, one of the most interesting insects in the world, but their love of human food means that they can often be found in large numbers in our homes carrying away crumbs and sweet treats. They also like to make their nests under paving and in lawned areas.
- Rats
At number five we have rats. It is said that in the UK you are never more than 20 feet from one of these destructive little pests and signs of an infestation include teeth marks on electrical wires and telephone cables, which can cause a fire risk. The first line of defence against rats is to keep your home in a good state of repair as rats can squeeze through holes less than 1cm wide!
As you can see from the list above there are plenty of creatures who are keen to make your warm and safe house their home. Many people use toxic fly sprays and other insect repellents in an attempt to protect the home and its occupants from pests; however they are actually doing the opposite! Insect repellents, rat poison and other pest control measures are toxic not only to pests, but also to pets and humans. In order to avoid using toxic materials in your home (and your business premises) install our fly screens for windows and doors instead and keep your home a healthy and happy place to live!
